🏆 Mallaig Primary Wins Prestigious Keep Scotland Beautiful Eco Award!

We’re thrilled to share that pupils and educators at Mallaig Primary School have been awarded an Eco School Green Flag with Commendation for litter and waste – an incredible achievement that recognises the school’s dedication to environmental action through their ‘Mallaig Clean’ initiative.

Led by teacher Lorna Unkles and supported by Parent Council member Roger Penarroya Zaldivar, the pupils tackled litter problems in the village head-on. After identifying that summer tourism and steam train visitors increased local litter, the children conducted detailed surveys, recorded data, and brainstormed creative solutions to reduce waste.

From poster campaigns, guest speaker visits, and equipment donations, to designing a campaign logo and launching a Facebook page to raise awareness, the project has truly brought the community together.

Lorna explained, “There are thousands of Eco Schools, but we’re the only school in Scotland to have received this prestigious award this year.”

The school’s Eco Committee – made up of pupils from P1 to P7 in both Gaelic and English mediums – have proven that real-world learning and environmental action go hand-in-hand. As one pupil put it: “It’s a small place and I didn’t expect it.” Another added, “People could use a bin, but they don’t.”

🎉 Congratulations to the entire Mallaig Primary team for making our community cleaner, greener, and prouder!
